         Cuenta la leyenda que el Califa de Alicante quiso casar a su preciosa hija Cántara con uno de los dos jóvenes musulmanes que estaban locamente enamorados de ella. Para escoger a uno de ellos el Califa tomó la decisión de que cada uno hiciera una tarea concreta, y Alá decidiría. Uno, Almanzor, tenía que ir hasta las Indias a traer especias raras a su amada. El otro, Alí, tenía que cavar una acequia para traer a su amada el agua verde de Tibi hasta Alicante. Se cuenta que Almanzor puso mucho empeño en su labor, mientras Alí se dedicó a escribir poemas a Cántara y a predicar su belleza, por lo que esta se enamoró de Alí. Cuando Almanzor volvió de su aventura el Califa le concedió la mano de su hija. Alí, desesperado, se suicidó lanzándose por un barranco. Cántara optó por la misma acción. El Califa murió de tristeza y, sorprendentemente, su efigie apareció grabada en el monte Benacantil. La corte, impresionada, decidió llamar a la ciudad “Alicántara”, de donde viene el nombre actual de Alicante.

          The "Face of the Moor' tells the story of an ancient Caliph of Alicante who wanted to marry his precious daughter, Cantara, with one of two young Muslims that were both in love with her.  To pick one of them, the Caliph made the decision to make a contest, and God (Ala) would decide.  One, Almanzor, had to go to India to collect rare spices for his love.  The other, Ali, had to dig a canal to bring fresh water from the River Tibi to his love in Alicante.  The story goes that Almanzor put his determination in his labor, while Ali dedicated his time to writing poems to Cantara and because of their beauty, Cantara fell in love with Ali.  When Almanzor returned from his adventure, the Caliph conceded his daughter's hand in marriage.  Ali, hopeless, committed suicide by jumping from a ravine.  Upon seeing this, Cantara did the same.  The Caliph died from sadness and surprisingly his effigy appeared recorded in the Mountain Bernacantil.  The court, impressed, decided to name the city, "Alicantara" which is where the name Alicante comes from.
